We’re in Stratford-Upon-Avon this weekend, birthplace of Shakespeare! Lovely Tudor buildings everywhere..

We didn’t book tickets for an actual Shakespeare play because my boyfriend’s Dutch so it gets a bit confusing (can be challenging enough for an English speaker, I think!), but we went to see this awesome ‘paper theatre’ wish I could find better pictures of The Icebook, a mixture of book art and animation, ‘miniature theatre show made of paper and light’ with only 12 in the audience at a time. (And a play about Galileo with my parents.)

The house in the top picture belonged to Shakespeare’s daughter, the bottom one was Shakespeare’s house as he grew up (his dad was a glove maker), and where he later lived with his wife Anne Hathaway. :)

Back soon enjoy the rest of your weekend!

I am so excited that Liz Lawrence is going to be playing a concert in our living room on Monday night (21/01/13)!

Dartmoor Zoological Park (originally Dartmoor Wildlife Park) is a 30-acre zoological garden located near the village of Sparkwell, on the south-west edge of Dartmoor, in the county of Devon in the South West of England.

The zoo was opened as Dartmoor Wildlife Park by Ellis Daw in 1968 on farmland his family bought in 1948. The zoo was forced to close to the public on 23 April 2006. In August 2006, it was bought for £1.1m by the Mee family consisting of Benjamin Mee, his wife, Katharine, son Milo and daughter Ella, who reopened the zoo to the public in July 2007 after a major refurbishment. Benjamin Mee, a former DIY columnist for The Guardian, also wrote a book about his experience refurbishing and living at the zoo, We Bought a Zoo: The Amazing True Story of a Young Family, a Broken Down Zoo, and the 200 Wild Animals That Change Their Lives.

In 2009, 20th Century Fox purchased the film rights to Mee’s book and filming on We Bought a Zoo began in January 2011 under the direction of Cameron Crowe. via

Working on getting this shop up and running (more problems than I had anticipated!) ….But not on the weekends :)

As my boyfriend and I work for the YHA (England and Wales Youth Hostel Association), we get to stay in all these amazing old buildings across the UK for free! This one at Tintagel, an old quarryman’s cottage (The aerial photo I took from the website so you can see how ‘isolated and atmospheric’ it is :), is near Tintagel Castle, said to be the birthplace of King Arthur (you know?)

And, at Perranporth beach (and visible from the big window they have at the hostel-on-a-cliff there), we saw a shark! In British waters it must be one of these, a veggie shark. :)

Moth Wing ring “Based on the patterns and shapes of a moth’s wing, cast from original hand carved wax” by Kaye Blegvad of datter in London, England.

“I’m an illustrator and designer, and Datter Industries is the jewellery arm of my creative endeavours. Datter is the Danish word for ‘daughter’. It’s part ‘data’, part ‘matter’. It’s a little alchemical. At the very least, it’s my project to turn drawings and ideas into jewelry.”
