The Spirit Bird, 2014 - 5.5x8”, cut paper, acrylic
A few months ago I was commissioned by Pitt Press to do a cover illustration for and upcoming collection of short stories. I was particularly excited to get back to some papercutting which I hadn’t done in a while. Plus I got to research and illustrate 8 birds, including one of my new favorites, the Yellow Wagtail (seen in the middle).
Unfortunately, this iteration of the cover won’t actually be printed. I was asked to rework the cover so that it is pretty stripped down (essentially just some of the birds and the ribcage). It’s a bummer, but I’m still proud to show the original piece, so here it is!

Kingfisher and Lotus and Hummingbird and Vanilla - 6x8” each, hand-cut paper, metallic spray paint, acrylic

Full reveal! I went back to my roots with birds and flowers for the first time in a while. These two pieces have monoprinted textures and sprayed stencils on them, which is way too much fun to play with. I hope to try them out more in the future as well.

If you’re in San Francisco, go check out the show! Details here

This is the original sketch I had done for the Occult Swap for Ten Paces and Draw. It spawned a new way of planning my work, so I actually finished it too!
